Already. Unlike most national elections which take the electorate months to get even mildly interested in, this one has the possibility of burning out even the most dedicated voter by November, 2008.
Please. Can I get a witness? Unless Sy Hersh has something new on the coming war with Iran in The New Yorker (as he does now), the Sunday news talk shows are nothing but candidates, candidates. The cable news shows are nothing but pundits, pundits, and polls. The coverage is mostly horserace, and I'm not just sick of the coverage. I'm sick of the candidates visiting South Carolina, too. Internet primaries are under way; debates have now been going on ... forever. Even Saturday Night Live is already spoofing Hillary Clinton... "Good evening, fellow Americans. In November, 2008, you will go to the polls and elect me president."
Jack Cafferty is the only other journalist I can find who shares my sentiments here. (Well, a college journalist or two were already sick of it by February.)
"So, have you had enough of all of this yet? Enough of the fitly ads and the lies and the posturing and the polls and the endless interviews, the desperation? And, of course, let's not forget all the morons like me, who think they understand all of this and just can't wait to tell you about it.
I know it's important for everybody to get out and vote. But after being subjected to this nonstop nonsense for days and weeks and months, well, it's easy to understand how you might be tempted to just go to bed, put a pillow over your head and wait until next Wednesday gets here. Here's the question -- what are the signs of election burnout?"
Problem is, he said this in 2006, FIVE DAYS before the November mid-term elections ... to repeat, in 2006. FIVE DAYS.
I am burned out more than 365 days away from the presidential election of 08, and being in the news business I can't get away from it. Somebody distract me, or just hit me in the head with a flat board so I can pass out until it's time to go to the poll.
I agree 100% but this is for our next president. NO MORE Chuck Norris, Oprah or lip-service. See fox news homepage today or MTV Dec. 3rd 7 pm est.
